Cupping Among The Kelantanese Malays
Cupping Therapy or 'Bekam' in Malays is one of the ancient treatment in Malay Archipelago especially among the Malays in Kelantan, Kedah, Perak, Trengganu, etc and among the Javanese. In China it is said that Cupping was practiced by the Chinese as early as Hans Dynasty 202 B.C. - A.D. 220.
It is said that in early days, the Malays used buffalo horns as cupping tools in replacement of glass or plastics. Even today we still can find some 'Malay Tukang Bekam' using animal horns in cupping.
In Muslim era it is written in the history of Islam that Rasullullah saw underwent cupping many time. Cupping or in arabic they called it ' Al-Hijamah' is a therapeutic process of removing unclean blood from the body. It is a form of medical treatment which has been recommended by Shriah.
Hadhrat Abu Kabsha (Radiallullahu 'Anhu) narreted that Rasullullah SAW used to undergo cupping on the head and between his shoulders and he used to say, " Whosoever removes this blood, it will not harm that he does not take any other medical treatment." (Miskat p 389)

Few Hadith About Cupping
Ibn Abbas reported God's messenger as saying " There is a remedy in three thing: The Incision of a cupping glass, a drink of honey, or cauterizaion by fire, but I forbid my people to cauterize."
Annas reported God's messenger as saying " The best medical treatments you apply are cupping and sea costus"
During the battle of Khaibar in 7 A.H. with the Jews, a jewish woman prepared some meat which she filled with deadly poison and presented to rasullulah SAW. Upon tasting the meat, the poison affected Rasullulah SAW. Rasullulah SAW than used to undergo cupping in order to relieve him from effects of the poison in his blood ( Tarmizi )
Rasullullah SAW was once hurt on his leg, hence (probably due to the clogging of the blood), he underwent cupping on his leg. (Miskat p. 389)
